Topic brief
AI summary · with sources“I’m so sorry” most prominently refers to a 2026 TikTok slideshow/carousel meme where users reveal that an apparently perfect or flattering photo was heavily edited, ending with the unedited image and the caption “I’m so sorry” or “I’m so sorry I lied.”[1][2][3][16] It is strongly associated with AI-edited childhood or Halloween costume photos and audio like Harry Styles’ “Coming Up Roses” or Prince’s “Purple Rain.”[1][2][3]
Reports from Yahoo, Mashable, AOL and Know Your Meme agree the “I’m so sorry” / “I’m so sorry I lied” trend began on TikTok around August 2026, then spiked in October 2026, often around Halloween costumes and childhood pictures.[1][2][3][4][16] Sources describe a recurring format of multiple progressively less-edited images plus a final apology, often using AI image tools; exact first origin beyond early examples like @theywanthunter’s Aug. 22, 2026 post remains uncertain.[2][3]
