Topic brief

AI summary · with sources

“I’m sorry I lied” most prominently refers to the 2026 TikTok Halloween photo-carousel meme often labeled the “I’m so sorry I lied / I’m so sorry” trend, where users show an unrealistically good childhood Halloween costume and then reveal the real, usually awkward or homemade version while apologizing.[1][2][5][8][11][15] It can also refer more generally to apology- or wordplay-based Halloween outfits such as “formal apology” costumes featuring suits and visible “I’m sorry” text.[9][10][12]

Guides describe the trend’s format as 3–5 TikTok slides that progressively strip away edits or “lies” about a costume until a final “I’m so sorry” reveal of the original photo, often tied to nostalgic or cringeworthy kids’ Halloween looks.[1][2][5][8][11][15] Articles note the meme began in mid‑2026 and surged around Halloween as people used AI or photo editing to fabricate idealized costumes before admitting the lie.[3][5][8][11][15] There is little evidence of a distinct, widely recognized physical costume sold specifically under the exact name “I’m sorry I lied,” beyond DIY pun and apology-themed costumes.[9][10][12]
